Wight Classics has a passion for classic cars and this job requires someone with an equal passion. Our garage has the facilities to undertake full engine or gearbox rebuilds as well as complete chassis and body restorations, but also undertakes regular servicing and repairs to enable our clients to enjoy driving their classic cars all year round.
The business consists of a main workshop and a body shop with full spray booth. There is also an engine workshop that is being developed to allow a separate area for engine/gearbox rebuilds. This role will be to lead the mechanical side of the garage and will be supported by a part-time technician and an apprentice.

Person specification
It is essential that you are an experienced mechanic who is able to work unassisted on a range of vehicles, whilst having the common sense to seek advice when confronted by an unfamiliar cars and engines.
You must be able to manage your time effectively, implementing an orderly and efficient workflow and taking the initiative when required. You should be able to provide accurate estimates for work to be undertaken and flag up problems so that customers can be informed at the earliest opportunity.
You should be an excellent team player and be prepared assist in all aspects of the garage as required. You must have a genuine passion and understanding historic cars – from pre-war to modern classics (upto 1980s).

Essential skills
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an impressive knowledge and experience of:

Engines – identifying faults, stripping down, cleaning, measuring, testing and rebuilding. Pistons (fuel and air measures/pressures).
Engine building to within correct tolerances and including properly sourced new parts.
Comprehensive knowledge of traditional petrol engines, in particular carburettor fuel systems and distributor type ignition systems.

Balancing carburettors – setting up and tuning.
Adjustments of jets, throttles and air screws.
Traditional electrical, transmission, braking and suspension systems.
Ability to problem solve, using online resources and manuals to tackle jobs on unfamiliar vehicles and parts with with confidence.
Maintain good records of all jobs undertaken.

Other skills:
Diagnostic Machines – old tuning machines / engine emission detectors.
Welding

Other
Must have a full drivers’ licence
Should have a comprehensive personal set of tools
